Learn HTML Using Notepad or TextEdit

However, for learning HTML we recommend a simple text editor like Notepad (PC) or TextEdit (Mac). We believe in that using a simple text editor is a good way to learn HTML. Follow the steps below to create your first web page with Notepad or TextEdit. Not everyone uses TextEdit but it’s an under appreciated app on the Mac. I personally use TextEdit all the time for quickly glancing at simple text documents, as a plain text viewer, basic word processing where the complete Pages functionality is not necessary, quick and dirty outlining, as a quick and simple HTML source viewer, and much more.

Web pages can be created and modified by using professional HTML editors.

However, for learning HTML we recommend a simple text editor like Notepad (PC) or TextEdit (Mac).

Follow the steps below to create your first web page with Notepad or TextEdit.

Step 1: Open Notepad (PC)

Windows 8 or later:

Open the Start Screen (the window symbol at the bottom left on your screen). Type Notepad.

Open Finder > Applications > TextEdit

Also change some preferences to get the application to save files correctly.In Preferences > Format > choose 'Plain Text'

Then under 'Open and Save', check the box that says 'Display HTML files as HTML code instead of formatted text'. New edition greatest hits blogspot.

Step 2: Write Some HTML

Write or copy the following HTML code into Notepad:

<h1>My First Heading</h1>

Step 3: Save the HTML Page

Save the file on your computer. Select File > Save as in the Notepad menu.

Name the file 'index.htm' and set the encoding to UTF-8 (which is the preferred encoding for HTML files).

Tip: You can use either .htm or .html as file extension. There is no difference, it is up to you.

Step 4: View the HTML Page in Your Browser

Open the saved HTML file in your favorite browser (double click on the file, or right-click - and choose 'Open with').

The result will look much like this:

TextEdit of MAC is same as NotePad of Windows. So if you want to write a HTML file of your website in MAC, TextEdit is the easiest and cheapest way to do so. There are some steps to write HTML code in MAC which are given below

Step 1: First of all open TextEdit. You can do it from Launchpad or by using shortcut keys. Just

press cmd+Space and type TextEdit. (Image 1)
Step 2: Write your HTML Code in it. Due to TextEdit is not aHTML editor, so it cannot complete tags or give any validation error. So please be careful when you are writing HTML in it.

Step 3: After writing the HTML code in the TextEdit we need to change the text mode. For doing this either use shortcut keys (Shift+Cmd+T) or go to 'Format' from the TextEdit menu bar and select 'Make Plain Text'. (Image 2)

Step 4: Now you have to save this file as .html. Go to File of TextEdit menu and select Save. You can save this file using shortcut keys (Cmd+S) also. Give it a name (here Greetings.html) with file extension

Now go to the folder where you have saved your HTML file. Open this file with your browser then you can see your HTML as anwebsite. (Image 5)

Suppose you need to modify this Greetings.html. Very simple, just open the file with TextEdit again. But after few updates of TextEdit youTextedit application need change some settings of TextEdit to see the raw code of HTML in MAC. Otherwise when you are going to open the html file it will look like the

For changing the setting we have to go to the Preferences (Cmd+,) from the TextEdit menu bar (Image 7A). Then select 'Open and Save' tab and check 'Display HTML files as HTML code instead of formatted text' option under When Opening a file. (Image 7B)

Now close the current window and TextEdit. Then open the HTML file again and you will see the source code of the HTML file. You can change anything in the file now.
